"This was a recital to grip the attention of the most jaded listeners"

"One of the most abiding recollections of this recital was the quite astonishing
wealth of detail that reached the ear"

Dr Cameron Roberts is a concert pianist, medical doctor, and internationally recognised expert on the application of science to musical performance.

As a pianist he has performed across Europe, Asia, and the Americas with leading instrumentalists, and his discography ranges from Bach’s Goldberg Variations to Brahms’s Flute Sonatas with Jacques Zoon, as well as original piano transcriptions. His performances have been acclaimed for their “astonishing wealth of detail,” “luminous tone,” and “a triumph of musical imagination.”

Roberts is the author of Optimizing Pianism: Evidence-Based Perspectives (2025), hailed by leading figures as “a revelation” and “a forensic exposé of destructive pedagogy.” The book draws on research in physics, biomechanics, physiology, neuroscience, and psychology, offering pianists practical strategies for developing technical excellence, learning excellence, and expressive originality.

Born in Melbourne, he studied Medicine and Music at the University of Melbourne before further training at the Australian National Academy of Music, and privately in London, Moscow, and at the Tanglewood Festival in Boston (participating as a violinist). He taught chamber music for many years at Madrid’s prestigious Escuela Superior de Música Reina Sofía, while completing a PhD on How the Pianist’s Touch Affects Tone Quality.

Alongside music, he works as an anaesthetist, a career that allows him to bring its wider skills of clinical medicine, motor skills performance and critical thinking into the musical practice room. Now based in London, Roberts performs widely and is in demand internationally as a pianism consultant, lecturer, and speaker.
